I started reading T
Remember The Hush-hush? Oprah fabricated a big thing about it a few years agone, and it become an international bestseller. This book came out in the 1920's, merely makes the same claims. Both are about how your thoughts and words will manifest themselves in your life. If yous constantly worry almost being hit by a bus, you will manifest yourself into getting hitting by a bus. These books claim that the contrary is also true, and tin therefore imagine your manner to wealth, true dearest, and happiness.I started reading The Secret back when it was on Oprah and I found it and so cool that I barely made it through ten pages. All information technology seemed to focus on was material goods, and wealth. People would enquire for a pale blueish Mustang GT, and because their faith was strong and pure, a pale blue Mustang GT would magically appear in their lives. It felt like a joke, or worse, and infomercial for a cult.
The Game of Life is less simplistic, and relies more on the Christian religion to explicate why manifestation works (Scovel-Shinn references a lot of Biblical passages). I was actually able to finish it, though I'm not entirely sold on the idea of manifestation. I don't retrieve you lot tin preclude bad things from happening to you lot merely by having religion, and I don't think you tin can have a Mustang GT, in your color of selection, just considering you asked for one. Scovel-Shinn never suggests that a bad outcome can exist for the greater good, which is worrisome. No 1 can live an easy life, no matter how much they pray for one.
One good matter that comes from thinking in the style these books propose is that it probably makes you a happier person. Believing that you will exist successful is a lot healthier than believing you'll be a failure. And sometimes sanity is information technology'south own reward.
At that place'due south a pop maxim that says 'God only gives us what we can handle'. Regardless of whether you believe in God, that point of view makes people stronger and less fearful of troubled waters. Then, I'1000 taking this book with a grain of salt—and choosing to think a lot of happy thoughts.

I have very, very mixed feelings almost this book.
For so many, it seems to fall into love or hate category. For me, it is a bit more complex.
I have never read The Undercover, which this volume has been compared to. Just I will say I did not even expect to finish this. The fact that I did was a surprise to myself.
Merely I disagree with much of it. Although in that location are things I do agree with.
First the proficient. I can appreciate the power of positive thinking. Many religions and Spiritual theories encourage this. The Buddhists certain do.
So does my dad. My dad is a Psychologist and both he and my mom, have specialized in a special kind of therapy chosen EFT. (Emotional Freedom Therapy).
From Wikpedia:
Emotional Liberty Techniques (EFT) is a course of counseling intervention that draws on diverse theories of alternative medicine including acupuncture, neuro-linguistic programming, energy medicine, and Thought Field Therapy (TFT). It is best known through Gary Craig's EFT Handbook, published in the late 1990s, and related books and workshops past a variety of teachers. EFT and similar techniques are often discussed under the umbrella term "energy psychology".
EFT is something I have used myself and it relies on purging oneself of negativity and releasing thoughts, beliefs and ideas that hold you dorsum or have yous feeling pain.
Not really so much different then the theories explained in this book.
I practice empathise and believe in the ability of positive thinking and believe it is fundamental. In that regard, I could relate to this book. And positive thinking is something that I have and continue to, struggle mightily with.
You have to see it in your mind for information technology to happen. And for you to believe information technology will happen. I believe that too and exercise believe negativity can often be a minefield, bringing forth more and more negativity. I believe that and also believe that forgiveness and healing are imperative..all things that I however struggle with. I d o not desire anyone reading this to believe I am this highly enlightened existence. The opposite is true. I struggle daily.
Hither is where I part ways with the book a scrap.
Although negativity can indeed induce even more negativity and our minds tin can sometimes make alive our biggest fears, I do not believe that all evil is acquired past human alone.
This book was written so long ago. It would be interesting to know what the writer,,how they would write it these days.
I have some very spiritual friends. We accept talks like this constantly. And I will write down what most this volume put me off. In other words..what I did not take as well.
This volume would contend that nosotros all have the upper hand in our ain life paths. That we are responsible for our own woes, our own beloved in life, our own affliction.
QUESTIONS I CANNOT Enquire THE Author BUT WOULD Similar TO.
How tin can information technology be argued that we create all illness? The book says we bring to usa that which is inspired past our own thought processes and negativity.
What about ix/xi?
Are nosotros to believe that those who perished brought it to themselves? Of coarse not!
What about babies born sick or who die at nascency? The book would argue that babies and small children who have illness are ill because of the thoughts of their parents.
That makes no sense to me.
People who become cancer? People who die in battle? Someone who randomly gets scrap by a shark? What almost people who are victims of a murderer? And Corona Virus? Is the virus OUR fault ?
I could proceed a tangent here just you go my drift. I do not subscribe to that belief system. Rather I think bad things happen to adept or great people. It is sad that it does just that is what I believe. That life is not e'er fair.
And forgiveness is of import. I accept many to forgive, including myself.
Bu t it is important for the 1 doing the forgiving.
In this book, an example is used of a man who hurts his wife horribly and she is told to forgive him, non to heel herself but because she loves him and her healing volition bring him back to her loving arms.
I do not desire to get all Stepford in this review but it is horribly dangerous thinking, peculiarly to people like..well..me. And all women honestly.
If a adult female has the shit kicked out of her and is angry about it? She should send him healing loving thoughts? I recollect not. I do want to stress that in the example used, the abuse was not psysical. It was psychological but information technology was still securely damaging.
Do not get me wrong. I believe in forgiveness where once I did not. Simply that would be to help the person doing the forgiving movement on. Not to get the abuser dorsum! I think some of the messages in this book are a flake dated.
I believe also that the emphasis on women every bit home makers shows the book'south age. How Feminists would dislike this book! I am not sure if I am a feminist but I did non DISLIKE it. Some of the book'south basic letters are true. Positivity DOES concenter positivity. Only I am not so sure only wishing for a Mercedes will in fact get you 1.
Only hey I am open minded. So right hither, I will say I wish for Brad Pitt. Hey, he's unmarried again. I wish for Brad Pitt to ask me for a date. Let's see what happens!
In all seriousness..sometimes the message..or parts of information technology..can be right but go a bit far out and that is basically what I think of the volume. I'd say information technology is a quick and interesting read and go ahead and read it! Much to debate in it.

I did non like this volume at all - admittedly I was a bit skeptical about it from the starting time, but I wanted to give it a go, so I gave information technology my best shot!
The iii best things well-nigh this book is that it'due south brusque and sweet, well written & the authors viewpoint/argument is like shooting fish in a barrel to comprehend! Only in MY OPINION, I recall what Florence Scovel-Shinn suggests & argues about in her book about wealth, happiness, health, love & success; is mostly a whole load of old tosh!
Don't get me wrong, I am not anti:
People wanting to achieve the most out of life or them wanting the same for others
Wanting to exist happy
Christian values
Or
Positive thinking.
But I think for some people 'a skillful boot upwardly the bottom' or 'reality check' would exist more than prudent to them, than them assertive in affirmations or practising Scovel-Shinn'south methodologies.
Instead of practising the methodologies suggested, if people want to try and achieve a particular goal or overcome a personal effect, I call up information technology would exist more beneficial for them; to adopt a more than proactive & applied approach. For example, dissimilar types of experiential learning might be ane possibility? Such as Kolb (1984) or Honey & Mumford (1982).
Guess what? Subsequently reading this book, I take no intention or desire someday soon to read 'The Secret' by Rhonda Byrne; but who knows, 'never say never'!
If you read this book, I hope yous relish it, far more than than I did & you benefit from reading it?
Happy Reading!

I really can't give this book a high rating or recommend it to anyone. It would only exist irresponsible. I am all for the whole thought of believing and visualizing and affirmations to make things come to be but this is but style over the height for me.This idea that if your baby dies or becomes sick it is because you brought information technology on due to not wanting them to become ill. Can't get behind that. People do not wish cancer onto themselves or their loved ones. At the same fourth dimension you tin't just visualize and recite affirmations and cancer just poofs away. You can't live in Tornado city and recite some affirmations and poof abroad all of the tornados. You wanting a new firm does non cause someone else to die for your wants. If they do die that is not your fault. There are many of people who knew that one person who recited their own prayers and the such.
People aren't always bright. I'm only afraid that someone will read this and decide that they don't need to take their three year sometime in for cancer treatments or to the dentist for a tooth cleaning.
And this matter against saving money? The story nigh the adult female who saved upwardly for a holiday meal and had it stolen and that was her fault because instead of saving she should take spent information technology all and God would have given her the coin in the terminate. Nope.
There are millions of people effectually the world who suffer and pray and are devoted and still suffer. God kills them and their children and spouses and family even though all of the above are praying and practicing just every bit this book says.
I'chiliad fine with positive thinking and visualization. I'm fine with gratitude. I draw the line with blaming parents for the death of their children and blaming victims of crimes, female parent nature, and disease for what has happened to them. Yeah, it is up to them to react to those things in a dissimilar mode but the fact that so and and then was raped is not considering they brought information technology upon themselves because they forgot a line in a prayer or were worried nearly walking through that dark parking lot lonely.

"The game of life is a game of boomerangs. Our thoughts, deeds and words return to us sooner or later with astounding accurateness." This quote practically sums up the purpose of the book. Although Shinn uses a lot of biblical references to prove her arguments, I believe that her philosophies can be practical to all people with different faiths. She uses a lot of real life examples to prove her points which I loved since well-nigh people can relate to the examples she referred to.Shinn mentions that through the correct frame of mind and intention, one tin get the central to a happy life and it is god'due south intentions to give him that life. I particularly liked information technology when she discussed that every human being in this globe is great at doing something, and that thing is his destiny that God wants him to pursue in life.
I recommend this volume to anyone who seriously wants to modify their outlook about life. In my opinion, Shinn successfully communicates in her volume that the ability of changing our lives is within us.

If Rhonda Byrne's THE SECRET had been written with a Christian bent, in a primarily Christian historic period and culture like the 20's, and contained just author anecdotes virtually people rather than by the people themselves, y'all would have this book: THE GAME OF LIFE AND HOW TO PLAY Information technology. The author, Florence Scovel-Shinn, centers her book on the bones premise of the "law of attraction," which is besides set forth by other famous authors/presenters such as Ester and Jerry Hicks. The idea, supported by many examples in the volume, is that that y'all concenter what you lot concentrate upon. And if you lot accept that, so y'all had better start concentrating upon things you really want. Otherwise, you lot volition allow your focus migrate more toward your worries, doubts and fears - so y'all'll manifest those things in your life but considering you're thinking well-nigh them. I find this to be a necessary reminder in my life, since I lapse into the habit of worry and anxious thinking by default. I accept used this reminder to "manifest" a better suited job, to worry less, and by and large to make better everyday and major life decisions.
What I did not similar is that both books focus on the monetary aspect of getting what you want, probably considering nothing has changed in the about 100 years since GAME OF LIFE was written. People want money, have e'er wanted money, and ever will want more coin. It'southward a little disconcerting, really, knowing that this hasn't inverse at all. But many of the examples - those that I choose to concentrate upon - involve creating health and happiness in one's life. I likewise learned corking means to formulate affirmations, which is apparently 1 of Scovel-Shinn's known specialities. For instance, to create more complimentary time in my life, I asked to receive opportunities for this "nether grace" - otherwise, opportunities for free fourth dimension might be created nether adverse circumstances like losing health or a task.

"The Game of Life for Women" has only near the same content every bit Ms. Shinn's original "The Game of Life and How to Play It"; simply "For Women" gets ane less star from me specifically for its translation into entirely feminine pronouns.
I can understand publishing a version in which non-gender-specific references are represented with feminine pronouns, rather than the all-masculine pronouns commonly used in the formal grammar of Ms. Shinn'due south early on-20th-century day; but this version goes a step further and transforms ALL male references to female--even when the anecdote was originally about a man.
I call back this wasn't the all-time idea, for two reasons:
one: You lot'd be difficult-put to notice a woman on Earth who doesn't have SOME males in her life. An all-female beingness feels unnatural in the anecdotes, and distracts me from the core purpose of the book. Ms. Shinn'southward original version had no shortage of stories about female clients & friends--as a matter of fact, all her books contain pretty much an equal residual of guys & gals. Better to have converted general pronouns to the feminine to achieve the "for women" effect, and get out the subjects of Ms. Shinn'southward stories lone.
ii: Suddenly her book is awash in female chauvinists. :) In Ms. Shinn's original stories, information technology'due south always fun to run across her stand her ground confronting pompous patriarchs who are inclined to discredit the advice of a mere woman. Her good sense & religion in God always win the day; but that effect is diminished in this femininized version.
Allow ME SUM-Up:
If you're a female reader who'd feel more than comfortable with a book that frames its advice specifically for women, and so this is a good choice for yous. I go to it myself when I only don't feel up to fighting old pronouns.
However, I'd as well encourage you to read the original "Game of Life" in Ms. Shinn's own words. Because much is lost in the translation; and I know you're confident enough in your own identity not to be offended by great-grandma's grammar. :)

The most helpful part of this volume to me was the idea of giving over "control" of the thought of your ultimate all-time or greatest skilful to the universal mind (who theoretically at to the lowest degree, has improve ideas than you being and knowing all as it does). I recollect too often, people get stuck visioning life one fashion, their way, and forget that something even better might exist out at that place if they could just run across it. Shinn suggests wording your affirmations and prayers to include the phrase "to the divine programme" or "by divine correct". She provides countless stories of people who tried to run their life by their programme and information technology turned out pretty badly. Organized religion and trust in a benevolent and loving universe are fundamental ideas to her book.
