Retrieve The Secret? Oprah made a big thing about it a few years agone, and it get an international bestseller. This book came out in the 1920's, but makes the same claims. Both are about how your thoughts and words will manifest themselves in your life. If y'all constantly worry about being hit by a omnibus, y'all volition manifest yourself into getting hit by a bus. These books claim that the opposite is also truthful, and can therefore imagine your fashion to wealth, truthful love, and happiness.

Both are about how your thoughts and words will manifest themselves in your life. If yous constantly worry almost being hit by a bus, you will manifest yourself into getting hitting by a bus. These books claim that the contrary is also true, and tin therefore imagine your manner to wealth, true dearest, and happiness.

I started reading The Secret back when it was on Oprah and I found it and so cool that I barely made it through ten pages. All information technology seemed to focus on was material goods, and wealth. People would enquire for a pale blueish Mustang GT, and because their faith was strong and pure, a pale blue Mustang GT would magically appear in their lives. It felt like a joke, or worse, and infomercial for a cult.

The Game of Life is less simplistic, and relies more on the Christian religion to explicate why manifestation works (Scovel-Shinn references a lot of Biblical passages). I was actually able to finish it, though I'm not entirely sold on the idea of manifestation. I don't retrieve you lot tin preclude bad things from happening to you lot merely by having religion, and I don't think you tin can have a Mustang GT, in your color of selection, just considering you asked for one. Scovel-Shinn never suggests that a bad outcome can exist for the greater good, which is worrisome. No 1 can live an easy life, no matter how much they pray for one.

My Mom originally found this book at a random eating place. She fell in dear with and gave a re-create to many people. Fifteen years later life was kicking me in the pants and I saw the book on her shelf and read it for the starting time time. For me this book is life transforming. I proceed to read it as I need to and I have memorized specific mediations. I hope this book will bring the same peace to you lot as it brought to me.

For so many, it seems to fall into love or hate category. For me, it is a bit more complex.

I have never read The Undercover, which this volume has been compared to. Just I will say I did not even expect to finish this. The fact that I did was a surprise to myself.

Merely I disagree with much of it. Although in that location are things I do agree with.

First the proficient. I can appreciate the power of positive thinking. Many religions and Spiritual theories encourage this. The Buddhists certain do.

So does my dad. My dad is a Psychologist and both he and my mom, have specialized in a special kind of therapy chosen EFT. (Emotional Freedom Therapy).

I practice empathise and believe in the ability of positive thinking and believe it is fundamental. In that regard, I could relate to this book. And positive thinking is something that I have and continue to, struggle mightily with.

You have to see it in your mind for information technology to happen. And for you to believe information technology will happen. I believe that too and exercise believe negativity can often be a minefield, bringing forth more and more negativity. I believe that and also believe that forgiveness and healing are imperative..all things that I however struggle with. I d o not desire anyone reading this to believe I am this highly enlightened existence. The opposite is true. I struggle daily.

Hither is where I part ways with the book a scrap.

Although negativity can indeed induce even more negativity and our minds tin can sometimes make alive our biggest fears, I do not believe that all evil is acquired past human alone.

This book was written so long ago. It would be interesting to know what the writer,,how they would write it these days.

I have some very spiritual friends. We accept talks like this constantly. And I will write down what most this volume put me off. In other words..what I did not take as well.

This volume would contend that nosotros all have the upper hand in our ain life paths. That we are responsible for our own woes, our own beloved in life, our own affliction.

QUESTIONS I CANNOT Enquire THE Author BUT WOULD Similar TO.

How tin can information technology be argued that we create all illness? The book says we bring to usa that which is inspired past our own thought processes and negativity.

What about ix/xi?

I could proceed a tangent here just you go my drift. I do not subscribe to that belief system. Rather I think bad things happen to adept or great people. It is sad that it does just that is what I believe. That life is not e'er fair.

And forgiveness is of import. I accept many to forgive, including myself.

Bu t it is important for the 1 doing the forgiving.

In this book, an example is used of a man who hurts his wife horribly and she is told to forgive him, non to heel herself but because she loves him and her healing volition bring him back to her loving arms.

I do not desire to get all Stepford in this review but it is horribly dangerous thinking, peculiarly to people like..well..me. And all women honestly.

If a adult female has the shit kicked out of her and is angry about it? She should send him healing loving thoughts? I recollect not. I do want to stress that in the example used, the abuse was not psysical. It was psychological but information technology was still securely damaging.

Do not get me wrong. I believe in forgiveness where once I did not. Simply that would be to help the person doing the forgiving movement on. Not to get the abuser dorsum! I think some of the messages in this book are a flake dated.

What a load of old tosh!

I know many people may disagree & I Exercise Non Mean TO INSULT, but.......

I did not similar this volume at all - admittedly I was a bit skeptical about information technology from the beginning, but I wanted to requite it a become, and so I gave information technology my best shot!

The 3 best things about this book is that information technology'due south short and sweet, well written & the authors viewpoint/statement is easy to cover! But in MY Stance, I think what Florence Scovel-Shinn suggests & argues about in her book about wealth, happiness, health,

Instead of practising the methodologies suggested, if people want to try and achieve a particular goal or overcome a personal effect, I call up information technology would exist more beneficial for them; to adopt a more than proactive & applied approach. For example, dissimilar types of experiential learning might be ane possibility? Such as Kolb (1984) or Honey & Mumford (1982).

I really tin can't give this book a high rating or recommend information technology to anyone. It would just be irresponsible. I am all for the whole idea of assertive and visualizing and affirmations to brand things come to exist just this is simply style over the superlative for me.

This thought that if your baby dies or becomes ill it is because you lot brought it on due to not wanting them to become ill. Tin't get behind that. People do not wish cancer onto themselves or their loved ones. At the same fourth dimension you can't just visualize and reci

She uses a lot of existent life examples to prove her points which I loved since most people can chronicle to the examples she referred to.

I learnt nothing from this book!

Firstly, I have no uncertainty in positive thinking, just it'due south not all most positive thoughts. We can't just "ask god" for things and wait to accept them all, because life is hard and it can be unfair sometimes. We should accept the fact that the rosy world doesn't exist. So if we want something we have to Work in order to have it, not sitting and hoping that the affair we are request for is going to be right in front of us.

Firstly, I have no dubiousness in positive thinking, merely it's not all virtually positive thoughts. and then, imo, manifestation is non right-thinking as zen buddhism defines right thinking. even equally i do NOT believe in "manifestation" i certainly Practise believe in coincidence, i.e. One thousand-d choosing to remain anonymous. things happen -- skillful and not quite and so practiced -- and it behooves u.s.a. to pay attention. then i suppose i believe in attention far more than than i believe in "manifestation", which is far more than nuanced than mere mortals are capable of understanding.

nonetheless i decided to stay with the volume until at least the 3rd and 4th chapters and slowly -- very slowly -- began to recognize some valid points. helpful and most healthy thoughts, really. so IF a person reads this work with a disquisitional mind that knows how to carve up the wheat from the chaff, and so that reader could possibly refine their thoughts on what life's game is about and how best to exist a player. just beware of her definitions. not all of them are reliable.

I read this volume 3 years ago and I remember being impressed by how simply the writing was and the lasting impression it made on me. My friend gave me a concrete copy of this book and I decided to spend a longer time reading it fifty-fifty though it is merely over lxxx pages. I love being reminded how my words have power and I need to focus and pay attention to the things I speak into my life and the lives of others. I read this volume three years ago and I remember being impressed by how just the writing was and the lasting impression it made on me. My friend gave me a physical re-create of this book and I decided to spend a longer time reading it fifty-fifty though it is just over eighty pages. I love being reminded how my words have power and I demand to focus and pay attention to the things I speak into my life and the lives of others. I as well loved the affirmations and I am looking to incorporate them into my daily life.

Someone recommended I read this book after I told them about "The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari". I loved that this book also fabricated reference to diverse Bible verses because all of these "new age" thinking are securely rooted in the Bible.
I dear the daily affirmations, a sense of calm and peace over comes me after saying the applicable ones.

I can understand publishing a version in which non-gender-specific references are represented with feminine pronouns, rather than the all-masculine pronouns commonly used in the formal grammar of Ms. Shinn'due south early on-20th-century day; but this version goes a step further and transforms ALL male references to female--even when the anecdote was originally about a man.

I call back this wasn't the all-time idea, for two reasons:

one: You lot'd be difficult-put to notice a woman on Earth who doesn't have SOME males in her life. An all-female beingness feels unnatural in the anecdotes, and distracts me from the core purpose of the book. Ms. Shinn'southward original version had no shortage of stories about female clients & friends--as a matter of fact, all her books contain pretty much an equal residual of guys & gals. Better to have converted general pronouns to the feminine to achieve the "for women" effect, and get out the subjects of Ms. Shinn'southward stories lone.

If you're a female reader who'd feel more than comfortable with a book that frames its advice specifically for women, and so this is a good choice for yous. I go to it myself when I only don't feel up to fighting old pronouns.

However, I'd as well encourage you to read the original "Game of Life" in Ms. Shinn's own words. Because much is lost in the translation; and I know you're confident enough in your own identity not to be offended by great-grandma's grammar. :)

I read the 2012 edition of this book, edited by Ruth Miller and it had a lot of updates to the original text and new citations to support the ideas. The original text was published at the back of the volume. I gave this book 3 stars considering without the mod update, I don't think I would take connected with it as much. To exist fair, it was originally published in the 1920's so it'southward easy to see how things have changed a chip between now and and then. Read the new edition, if you have the chance. The most helpful part of this volume to me was the idea of giving over "control" of the thought of your ultimate all-time or greatest skilful to the universal mind (who theoretically at to the lowest degree, has improve ideas than you being and knowing all as it does).
